TOUR OVERVIEW
Embark on a 12-day journey through the heart of Mongolia, where vast deserts, lush valleys, ancient cities, and Silk Road legends await. This thoughtfully curated itinerary blends Mongolia’s most stunning natural landscapes with historical landmarks that once thrived along the ancient Silk Road.
Your adventure begins with a city tour in Ulaanbaatar, where you’ll visit key cultural sites, including the National History Museum, Gandan Monastery, and Zaisan Hill Memorial for panoramic views over the capital.
Then, journey south into the Gobi Desert, once a vital link on the Silk Road and now a vast wilderness of geological wonders and fossil-rich formations:
-
Baga Gazriin Chuluu – A dramatic granite rock formation and a spiritual site along the Silk Road, home to centuries-old temple ruins and natural springs.
-
Tsagaan Suvraga (White Stupa) – Towering white-and-orange clay cliffs that resemble an ancient city from afar, shaped by millennia of wind erosion.
-
Yol Valley (Vulture Canyon) – A dramatic gorge hidden within the Gurvan Saikhan National Park, perfect for light hiking and wildlife spotting in a cool, shaded oasis surrounded by rugged cliffs and unexpected greenery.
-
Khongor Sand Dunes – Among the largest in Mongolia, these golden dunes stretch for over 180 km. The "singing dunes" produce a low hum when the wind blows—a surreal desert phenomenon.
-
Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs – A legendary dinosaur fossil site famously explored by Roy Chapman Andrews in the 1920s, where the first dinosaur eggs were discovered.
Continue north through central Mongolia, where Silk Road-era ruins, ancient capitals, and sacred landscapes paint a vivid picture of Mongolia’s past:
-
Ongiin Khiid – The ruins of one of Mongolia’s largest monasteries, strategically located near Silk Road trade routes.
-
Orkhon Valley & Waterfall – A UNESCO World Heritage Site and once a bustling cultural and economic hub for steppe empires tied to the Silk Road.
-
Kharkhorum – The ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, founded by Genghis Khan and frequented by merchants, scholars, and emissaries from across Eurasia. Visit the Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia’s first Buddhist monastery, built from the remains of the ancient city.
-
Lake Ugii – A peaceful stopover known for its migratory birdlife and serene natural beauty.
-
Hustai National Park – A remarkable conservation area where you can observe the once-extinct Przewalski horse (Takhi) roaming wild in its natural steppe habitat alongside marmots, deer, and diverse birdlife.
The tour concludes with a visit to the Chinggis Khan Equestrian Statue Complex, commemorating the founder of the Mongol Empire, whose empire opened and protected trade along the Silk Road for centuries.
This journey is designed for travelers who love natural scenery, light hiking, and history-rich sites, especially those tied to the great Silk Road. It does not include horse or camel riding unless requested, and there are no nomadic family visits or shopping stops—focusing purely on authentic landscapes and cultural landmarks. Let the wide skies, desert winds, and echoes of Silk Road history guide you through one of the most unforgettable landscapes on Earth.
